IMAGES FROM WESTERN IRELAND

At the beginning of the day, the light comes on quickly, and no sooner do your eyes have a chance to adjust, but the lighting has changed; but the light at the end of the day is an entirely different story.  As the day starts to wind down, the sky becomes golden and the cool shadows become longer.  It happens slowly . . . your eyes adjust and you see more.  Gradually the sky deepens and the shadows become one as the light bends over the hills and into the hollows.  Time seems to slow down.  Farmers come home for the day, meanders of turf smoke trickle up from the chimneys.  It is planned that this body of work will appear in a book to be titled "Western Light" as a collection of paintings, drawings, poems and stories about a way of life and people in the western light of the  their lives.  It will be dedicated to my friends and family, the land and the music in Kilfenora, Co. Clare, but particularly to Mary Doorty of the Burren Farmhouse, who first introduced me to Kilfenora, and continues to do so.
